The German-born designer is internationally recognized for his trendsetting carpet designs. He combines classic elements with minimalist design, radically breaking old visual rules, and has revolutionized the world of rugs. His collections have won awards, such as the Red Dot and the Carpet Design Award and have long been featured in renowned museums and art exhibitions.
Jan Kath has a deep, emotional connection to traditional craftsmanship. “I essentially grew up on carpets,” he says. His grandfather and father traded in high-quality carpets, took him to the vibrant markets and bazaars of Tehran, Istanbul, and Tabriz. These visits sharpened his eye and developed his understanding of color combinations and proportions, and later led him to make a transition from trading to creating.
Hand knotted carpets became Jans "medium" and a vehicle, for expressing himself artistically. While other artists work with brushes and paint, Kath uses Tibetan highland wool and the finest Chinese silk. And although his designs are modern and contemporary, he describes himself - when it comes to quality and manufacturing – as “unconditionally traditional”.
