THE GUARDIAN PALMS by Sumaya Shelbi

The Guardian Palms marks the inaugural piece in Gifts of

Legacy, Iwan Maktabi’s new gifting series dedicated to cultural

reverence and design excellence.

The Guardian Palms is a sculptural, hand-knotted wall piece by

Saudi designer Sumaya Shelbi, an homage to Al-Diriyah and

Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day. Framed by two palm trees,

symbols of resilience and unity since 1727, the composition

unfolds in two color variations, sand or white color, evoking the

texture and rhythm of Najdi mudbrick architecture through

subtle reliefs and abstract geometry.

Roberto Sironi – Hypercode
In his first collaboration with cc-tapis, Italian designer Roberto Sironi unveils Hypercode, a series of four handwoven rugs crafted using the jacquard weaving technique. Drawing on ancient scripts, mythology, and graffiti, each piece becomes a conceptual landscape filled with coded references and layered meaning.

The exhibition takes place at the Iwan Maktabi Flagship, also home to cc-tapis, and features an open-air rooftop overlooking the skyline of Downtown Dubai and Jumeirah’s serene beaches.

Hypercode references the contemporary world, its essence remains deeply rooted in tradition.

The rug becomes a narrative artifact where warp and weft intertwine to tell the stories of peoples, cultures, and individuals.

Each rug in the collection conveys messages composed of symbols and languages that go beyond immediate comprehension.

Using the jacquard technique, master artisans weave tradition and innovation together, creating intricate patterns transformed into true visual codes.

An unfolding narrative accessible only to those who hold the key to decode it.

By superimposing solemn Greco-Roman inscriptions, mysterious Japanese mythological symbols, spontaneous declarations of love and an ironic smiley face,

Roberto Hypercode transforms the rug into a palimpsest of timeless stories.

India Mahdavi – Rebus
Internationally acclaimed for her bold use of colour, Iranian-French architect India Mahdavi introduces Rebus, a collection of hand-tufted and chain-stitched tapestries developed with cc-tapis. Known as “the reigning queen of colour,” Mahdavi translates her iconic geometric forms into textile art, merging abstraction with narrative in a uniquely vibrant way.

Simultaneously, Iwan Maktabi LAB at Alserkal Avenue hosts the Artists Editions exhibition — a bold and diverse showcase of contemporary rug art and ceramic works by leading regional talents.

Leila Jabre Jureidini – The Other Side
Beirut-based artist Leila Jureidini presents The Other Side, a deeply evocative collection produced by Iwan LAB. Drawing on her academic background in art, design, and anthropology, her tapestries explore liminal spaces through texture, depth, and colour.

Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim
A pioneer of the UAE’s contemporary art scene, Ibrahim unveils a collection inspired by his birthplace in the Hajar Mountains. His rugs evoke organic forms and primal symbols, bridging nature and abstraction in earthy, painterly hues.

Noor Alsuwaidi – The Eye of the Beholder
In The Eye of the Beholder, Emirati artist Noor Alsuwaidi invites viewers into a visual playground of colour and form. Her abstract collage-style rugs encourage interpretation and emotional dialogue through bold, imaginative expression.

The exhibition also features sculptural installations/modules and ceramics by Omar Chakil, Mary-Lynn & Rasha Nawam, Mary-Lynn & Carlo Massoud, and Minnie Tasso.

Iwan Maktabi opens 2025 by launching four new collections  

Launch spotlights collaborations with Lebanese creatives Rabih Geha and Leila Jabre Jureidini,

and Iwan LAB’s reinterpretation of the work of legendary artist Lucio Fontana

On the occasion of UAE National Day, we’re honored to bring forth the Taghrouda collection. One that is designed by two Emirati sisters, Sheikha and Afra Bin Dhaher.

Focusing on the common histories, landscapes and cultural elements found within the Gulf region, the Taghrouda collection is inspired by the chanted Bedouin poetry that is traditionally composed and recited while travelling through the deserts. The captivating chant not only entertains the riders but also encourages their animals to travel in synchrony.

The designs proposed were created in an antiphonal and improvisational manner, as how the poetry is constructed; where one starts with a poetry “line”, prompting the other to respond with a “line” similar in rhyme. Thus, these abstract compositions were created symbolizing the natural landscape, movement and migratory paths of the people within it.

Iwan Maktabi unveiled a limited-edition collection of hand-knotted carpets by Emirati artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim at Editions, Downtown Design. The collaboration transforms Ibrahim’s iconic abstract works into collectible carpets. Also showcased were pieces from regional talents such as Sultan Bin Fahad, Noor Al Suwaidi, as well as Lebanese renowned ceramists like Hala Matta, Minnie Tasso and Mary-lynn Massoud and Rasha Nawam.

Designed by Dubai-based NOMADK, the gallery-style showroom seamlessly blends natural light and modern architecture to highlight the artistry of handmade rugs.

As part of this milestone, we proudly unveiled the first-ever shop-in-shop for cc-tapis, marking their debut outside Milan. Renowned architect and designer India Mahdavi joined us to launch Criss Cross, her vibrant collection for cc-tapis.

The store is more than a retail space, it’s a cultural hub for the design community, featuring a vertical gallery for rotating exhibitions, a rooftop for gatherings, and flexible interiors for events and collaborations. Our integrated Iwan Lab also offers bespoke carpet-making services for designers and architects.
